October and November are peak wedding months, and guests face the same question each time: what do I wear when it's 60°F at the ceremony and 45°F at the reception? Summer pastels look out of place, black can feel too somber, and anything white is out.

This guide covers the colors and cuts guests are wearing this fall, and how to test them on your own photo before buying.

The colors: jewel tones and warm darks

Retailers and wedding blogs mostly agree on this year's palette. Ever-Pretty's 2026 guide lists burgundy, wine, forest green, chocolate brown, navy, caramel, burnt orange, gold and dusty rose as colors that "photograph well with fall flowers and warm reception lighting." Other guides add moodier shades like plum, olive and terracotta.

Our pick for most guests is emerald or forest green. It photographs well in both warm and cool light, it rarely clashes with the bridal party, and it flatters more skin tones than burgundy does. Burgundy is the safer choice for an evening, black-tie or indoor wedding.

The catch with jewel tones is that small shifts in shade matter. Emerald on one person looks muddy on another, and a try-on on your own photo shows which way it goes for you.

The cuts

  • Slip dresses. Satin bias-cut midis are still the default for cocktail-attire weddings. Add a blazer or wrap for the outdoor part.
  • Long sleeves. More guests are choosing long sleeves for fall, for warmth and because they look formal without much effort.
  • Cowl and high necks. Both look elegant, and both work well under a statement necklace.
  • Midi length. It works for semi-formal and outdoor ceremonies, and your hem stays out of wet grass.

For fabrics, velvet is the easiest way to look seasonal. Satin, lace and jacquard work too, and chiffon layers well for outdoor venues. Metallic details in bronze or champagne fit an evening reception.

Two ways, depending on whether you've found a dress yet.

Still deciding on a color? Open the AI Clothes Changer and choose the Emerald Slip Dress preset. It's already a fall wedding guest look. Then rerun it with the extra details box set to "deep burgundy", "navy" or "chocolate brown". Four results from the same photo will tell you more about which color suits you than an afternoon of browsing.

Found a specific dress online? Save the product photo and upload it to the AI Clothes Swap along with a full-body photo of yourself. The AI copies the dress, including its cut, color and fabric, and ignores the model wearing it.

Other presets that work for fall weddings: the Little Black Dress for a formal evening ceremony, and the Sequin Party Dress if the reception is the main event. For men, the Navy Business Suit covers most dress codes and the Black Tuxedo handles black tie.

One preset to skip as a guest: the Lace Wedding Gown. It's in the menu for brides, not for the people watching them.

Try-on results show color and silhouette well. Fine details like lace patterns or exact sequin spacing can come out simplified, so check those in the product photos. Size and fit still depend on the brand's size chart.
